Early in the morning, the first shutters open on the charming little palazzi lining the streets of Rome. In the bars, coffee is already being brewed, while the Gucci sales assistant makes her way to the boutique on Via Condotti. At the foot of the Spanish Steps, the first tour groups begin to gather, pausing in admiration before the historic church of Trinità dei Monti.
These, and countless other unforgettable impressions, are gathered by travellers from one of the most beautiful and storied luxury hotels in history: Hotel Hassler.
Set above the Spanish Steps, arguably the city’s most famous hotel offers a dreamlike view across the Città Eterna and its seven hills. Every corner of the house is defined by an exceptional sense of luxury and refinement, its interiors still bearing the unmistakable signature of its late owner and director, Roberto E. Wirth.
Join us as we look beyond the façade of this truly remarkable hotel — and allow the enduring magic of the Hassler to inspire your next Roman sojourn.
Warmly yours,

Rooms and Suites
Hotel Hassler offers its guests a total of 85 luxurious rooms across various categories, as well as 15 elegant suites. The interiors are striking in their individuality. Colours, forms and layouts vary considerably from one accommodation to the next: some rooms are composed in sun-warmed shades of orange, others in fresh blues or deeper, more dramatic tones.
What unites them all is a finely judged interplay between modernity and classical refinement. Harmony is central to the design of the rooms and suites — a quiet sense of balance that allows each space to feel both distinctive and deeply considered.
The fabrics used for bed linen, curtains, wall coverings, sofas, chairs and carpets have been chosen with great care. Much of the furniture consists of antiques, complemented by bespoke pieces crafted in the style of different historical periods. Most of the walls are clad in exquisite brocade, lending the rooms a rich, tactile elegance that speaks unmistakably of Roman grandeur.
For guests who prefer an even greater sense of space, the hotel offers 15 sophisticated and exceptionally elegant suites.
On the fifth floor lies what is surely one of the most beautiful hotel suites in Europe. Its imposing name, the Trinità dei Monti Suite, immediately reveals the privileged setting of this exquisite and luxurious accommodation.
With direct views of the neighbouring church from which it takes its name, the suite more than lives up to its title. Luxurious design elements and the finest materials define every detail — from the fabrics and marble to the stationery. This one-bedroom suite features no fewer than five balconies, each offering a unique perspective over the Città Eterna, the Eternal City.
Gourmet Cusine
For many of the hotel’s regular guests, it remains an experience to be savoured time and again; for first-time visitors, it is a beguiling adventure. We are speaking, of course, of the rooftop restaurant Imàgo.
Set on the sixth floor of the hotel, this temple of gastronomy is wrapped in an atmosphere of refined elegance. What truly captivates its guests, however, is the singular panoramic view across the rooftops of Rome. From here, the city’s most celebrated landmarks can be admired from above, spread out like a living tableau of history, beauty and grandeur. By evening, the thousand lights of the city begin to shimmer, transforming a perfect dinner at Imàgo into an unforgettable Roman experience.
Hotel Hassler has long been the Roman residence of choice for some of the world’s most celebrated figures. Many of them have become devoted admirers of the culinary signatures of Hassler’s chef, Andrea Antonini. European high nobility, film stars, politicians and artists have all passed through the hotel’s doors — and many share a particular affection for its elegant Sunday brunch.
This intermezzo of warm and cold delicacies offers the perfect beginning to a leisurely day of celebration. On the remaining days of the week, guests are treated to a delicious breakfast buffet, served with the quiet polish and grace for which the Hassler is so admired.
Salone Eva welcomes Romans and hotel guests alike in splendid style. Named after a young lady whose likeness stands as a statue within the salon, this graceful meeting place for culinary pleasures — from breakfast and lunch to dinner — offers an elegant setting for refined encounters over beautifully composed dishes.
Adjoining the salon, the Hassler Bar is an intimate and inviting cocktail bar, ideal for an aperitif or a post-dinner drink. Surrounded by dark wood, red leather armchairs and gilded mirrors, its glamorous ambience recalls the sophisticated splendour of the 1940s.
Princess Diana once confided to Roberto E. Wirth that she had enjoyed the finest Bellini in the world here — although even she found it difficult to resist the hotel’s own creation, the Veruschka, composed of pomegranate juice and Italian sparkling wine.
In the verdant inner courtyard of Hotel Hassler, the Palm Court opens during the summer months. This enchanting space becomes the heart of the house in the warmer season. Here, guests may enjoy exquisite dishes and refreshing drinks in a shaded, atmospheric setting. Amphorae filled with fresh, fragrant plants and flowers line the walls, creating a graceful visual link towards the boundary of the Borghese Gardens.
Amorvero Spa
Guests wishing to remain active during their Roman sojourn are equally well catered for. Beyond the many jogging routes through the park of Villa Borghese and past Villa Medici, the hotel offers an exclusive fitness area and the Amorvero Spa.
Here, guests may train on state-of-the-art equipment while enjoying an extraordinary view over Rome. A steam bath and sauna are also available, providing a welcome counterpoint to days spent exploring the city.
During the sunnier months, the adjoining terrace, with its view of the Spanish Steps, invites lingering in serene privacy.
In addition to the pleasures of Amorvero Spa, guests also have access to one of the city’s finest hair salons: Rossano Ferretti.
A Homage to Roberto E. Wirth
He was a man who fascinated those around him. Behind his name lies a compelling story; his life was remarkable, and his contribution to the world of international hospitality nothing short of extraordinary. For more than 40 years, Roberto E. Wirth presided over his hotel at the Spanish Steps — one of the very few grand luxury hotels of its calibre that remains privately owned to this day.
Roberto’s career began with a first-class education at the Hotel School in Stresa, Italy, followed by studies at the renowned School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He went on to gather extensive experience in luxury hotels abroad. Equally significant was the solid family foundation of the Wirth dynasty, now in its sixth generation of passionate hoteliers.
In 1978, following posts in Boston, San Francisco, Honolulu and Geneva, Roberto returned to Rome. He also served as a consultant for a restaurant in Japan and two further establishments in Taiwan. Under his leadership, the Hassler was tended with an extraordinary love of detail, personal dedication and a level of service that approached the sublime — cared for not merely as a hotel, but as a private house of exceptional distinction.
He was the only hotel director in the world to have been born deaf and yet to have pursued, with such remarkable success, a profession so deeply rooted in communication. With iron discipline, initiative and immense diligence, he learnt from childhood, at specialist schools, to speak almost as others do. In both Italian and English, he was able to read lips.
For me personally, he was a role model from the very beginning: a man of great heart, sensitivity, character and humour. Roberto E. Wirth and I first met in 2002. At the time, I was 16 years old and the youngest hotel journalist in the world. A newspaper article brought me to his attention, and he invited me to Rome for a stay. This gesture was a profound honour.
During my time in Rome, we came to know one another better. His unwavering love for this house was overwhelming. From that first encounter, I understood what true passion is, and what it looks like. I understood what it can awaken in a person — and the impressive developments to which it can lead.
Roberto was one of the first hotel directors to support me at the beginning of my career as a hotel journalist. For his belief in me, and for the unforgettable conversations we shared, I remain grateful to him from the bottom of my heart. His sudden death in 2022 deeply affected many people, myself included. A truly special man left us far too soon.
Today, his two children, Veruschka and Roberto Jr., continue to guide the fortunes of the legendary Hotel Hassler. In doing so, they represent the aforementioned sixth generation of this venerable hotelier family. Together, they preserve the memory of their father while, at the same time, writing their own chapter in the story of Hotel Hassler Roma.
A Lasting Impression
A hotel can be a temporary home. A place that invites one to arrive, to feel at ease, to linger — and that conveys the rare sensation of being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. Those who reside at the Hassler will understand precisely what I mean, for this hotel is such a place.
Luxurious, classically elegant, blessed with an exceptional gourmet kitchen and perfectly positioned, it possesses all the qualities of a grand hotel. Yet what gives its atmosphere an additional and unmistakable depth is the spirit that Roberto E. Wirth breathed into the house — a spirit preserved as both a homage to him and his achievements, and as an enduring standard of excellence.
In a world with an ever-growing number of luxury hotels, it is above all the people — both in front of and behind the scenes — who make the difference. At the Hassler, you will experience how perfect hospitality and genuine warmth can exist in complete harmony. I have no doubt you will be as captivated by it as I am.
Here, above the Spanish Steps, hospitality of a truly exceptional kind is offered. It is an experience I wish, from the heart, for each and every one of you.
